When I first started studying yoga back in 1979, I had no idea of what I was getting myself into. I was simply interested in the physical ease of stretching my body, because for me, it was easy, and it felt good. However, as I was being guided in my first formal class held at the University of Utah, it dawned on me that yoga was much more than a good stretch.
There I was holding myself in Downward Dog for what seemed like an eternity watching the sweat drip, drip, dripping off the tip of my nose onto the yoga mat. Hmmmm, I pondered, this is much more than a flexibility exercise. I was gaining an amazing sense of strength, both physically and mentally. And then, slowly but surely, I started viewing life differently.
I caught myself being more patient, acting with more kindness, feeling more at ease. And… I started recognizing the poor choices I was making with the foods I was eating and the amount of alcohol I was consuming in the spirit of the party scene (I was 21 years old). My choices began to change and so did my social scene. I began to seek out conversations regarding wholistic health, which was a relatively new concept at the time.
Within a year, I left Utah, enrolled in a School for Wellness Education and Massage Therapy training, and never looked back. Fast forward 40 years, my life is immersed in the joys of turning others onto the depth and expanse of this powerful art and science through my own Wellness Academy. You could say I’ve come full circle.
Seeing others awaken their innate ability to live their dreams is a reward beyond measure. I have witnessed the strengthening of family bonds, deepening of friendships, healing of past traumas, discovery of creative expression, blossoming of personalities, and compassionate acceptance of self and others, plus the empowerment of finding and expressing one’s own voice.
