A restful night's sleep thanks to lavender oil
Most of us in Montana pack a lot into our brief, and very special, summer days - hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, SUPing, camping, gardening, festival-going... and yoga?! Often yoga and a full, restful night sleep fall down on the priority list because we know there is a very looooong winter ahead of us! Yet sleep is important. Chronic sleep loss can lead to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system's power, reports the Harvard Women's Health Watch.
Rather than reaching for a sleeping pill (with a terrible list of potential side effects) I prefer to reach into nature's medicine cabinet for lavender essential oil. I put a few drops in the diffuser at bedtime. I also love to mix it with lotion (non-scented all natural) and rub it on my feet and take legs-up-the-wall pose (Viparita Karani) for 10- 15 minutes before bed. Often my entire family takes part in this ritual. As a side note to parents looking for ways to help kids wind down, I highly recommend it! It sets the stage beautifully for storytime, prayers or whatever your pre-bed ritual may be.
Waking from a restful night's sleep, energized for the new day is something every body needs. It's not guaranteed, but certainly worth a try and lavender essential oil doesn't carry nasty side effects that over-the-counter meds usually do!
